I am excited to announce H-France’s fall webinar. Designed particularly for graduate students, H-France webinars are open to anyone. The fall webinar is scheduled for 4 November 2013 at 3:00 pm e.t. and will last for 90 minutes.
The topic for the fall webinar is “Emotions in History: An Introduction.”

William Reddy, Duke University, will lead the webinar, and he will be joined by three additional scholars:
Barbara Rosenwein, Loyola University of Chicago
Thomas Dodman, Boston College
Piroska Nagy, Université du Québec à Montréal
The webinar will be moderated by Darrin McMahon, Florida State University.
The readings for the seminar and questions to consider related to the readings are listed below.
We would encourage you to include the webinar in any appropriate graduate course that you may be teaching and recommend it to your graduate students and to your colleagues.
Instructions are provided below as to the procedures to sign into the webinar.

Questions for the Webinar:
1. What are emotions? Does adopting a current definition work, for example, one derived from psychology or neuroscience? If not, what does?
2. How can we account for the rise of interest in the history of emotions?
3. What are the ways in which a historian can “get at” emotions? Are notions like “emotional regimes, emotional communities, and emotional societies” useful?
4. Do the emotions of particular individuals fit into the history of emotions? If so, why? If not, why not?
5. How can a history of emotions contribute to our knowledge of history ? For example, how are emotions involved in historical change?
Instructions for Joining the Webinar:
The instructions are given step-by-step, but many of you will find the process easy to implement simply by following the instructions in various dialogue boxes.
What do You Need:
1. A computer with internet access and with Java installed. Most will already have Java installed, but if not, it may be freely installed from the following site: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
2. Earphones or a headset to participate in the webinar.
To Simply Watch the Webinar:
1. Simply follow the directions for Step 1-4 (Note: If only watching the webinar, your speakers should automatically sync to the webinar system. If they do not and you cannot hear anything, you will need to run Audio Steps 1-3).
To Open the Blackboard Collaborate Program
1. Click on link for the webinar: https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=2007081&password=M.2A7D037D580D48E5AA4ED687FD07BA
2. Enter your first and last name. Click “Log In”
Note: You may be asked to update your version of Java, but this is likely not necessary. If you do not have Java installed, the system may prompt you to install Java or may simply stall at this point. If the program stalls, go to the Java site listed above and install Java and then start over (including re-starting your computer after the Java installation).
3. The Blackboard Collaborate program should open. You might be asked to identify your type of internet connection.
4. To enlarge the Audio & Video panel (which will be in the upper left of the Blackboard Collaborate screen), simply go to the drop down menu in the top right hand corner of the “Audio & Video” panel. Click the drop down menu and at the bottom of the menu click “Detach Panel.” The panel will the appear in the middle of the Black Board Collaborate screen. Enlarge the panel by dragging the edges of the panel.
To Activate Your Audio (Speakers and Microphone)
1. Click “Tools” at top of the Blackboard program. Then in drop down menu highlight “Audio” and then in the extension menu click “Audio Setup Wizard.”
2. Select your speaker device and click “OK” – then you can adjust your speaker volume. Click “Play” to hear a message to adjust your volume.
3. Once the message has ended, a new dialogue box appears. If you can hear the message at an appropriate volume, click “Yes.” If not, click “No” and follow directions to resolve problem.
4. Once speakers are set (i.e., you have clicked “Yes” ), a dialogue box will appear to set your microphone level. Select your microphone and click “OK.”
5. Then click record and “speak” (You should see a green light bar that indicates that your voice is being recorded). Once you have recorded for a few seconds, click “Stop”
6. A dialogue box will appear. Click “play” to hear your recording. If the recording is too soft or loud, click “No”, which will allow you to alter the recording level.
7. Once the recording volume is adequate, click “Yes” and a dialog box will appear. Click “OK” and the Audio Set Up is now complete.
8. Click the “Talk” bar at the bottom of the “Audio & Video” panel to activate your microphone.
To Activate Your Video
1. At the bottom of your “Audio & Video” panel, click the “Video” bar. Your image should appear on the “Audio and Video” panel.
2. If your image does not appear, click “Tools” at top of the Blackboard program. Then in drop down menu highlight “Video” and then in the extension menu click “Camera Settings.”
3. Change your camera setting under the “Select Camera to Use” drop down menu. The click the “Video” bar at the bottom of the Audio & Video” panel. Repeat these steps until you select the camera/webcam that will send out your image.
